GEWR'22 RESULTS

Two days of the GEWR-2022 Forum cemented the event's status as the leading platform for Kazakhstan, CIS and Central Asian countries to discuss key issues of waste management and green energy and share global and national best practices and competencies in the waste management.

The forum emphasized that Kazakhstan will continue to work on reforming its waste management system. Interaction and cooperation of stakeholders involved in the waste management sector will continue to be strengthened and deepened.

Key conclusions and directions for the cooperation:
• Development of regional cooperation in the waste management
• Active participation of manufacturers, importers, and waste management companies in reforming the EPR system
• Strengthening LGA activities for the implementation the requirements of the Environmental Code
• Promotion of ESG principles in the waste management system
• Development of technological solutions for recycling and waste management
• Removing barriers in the use of secondary raw materials in the production of products and packaging, including plastics
• Enhancement of PPP projects in waste management
• Transition to BAT principles in waste management and other issues.

As part of the Forum, the public Waste Management Awards II recognised the achievements of 8 companies out of 42 nominees. The winners of the award were selected by a panel of experts based on the evaluation of submitted applications and the awarding of points.

The Forum also included B2B meetings between representatives of waste management equipment companies, waste collection and recycling businesses, industrial waste and other stakeholders.

Thus, we can consider that the goal of the Forum, which was to find the solutions for the stimulation of recycling industry and green energy at the national and regional level, has been achieved.
